Brazil's Ipanema is colorful, chic and fun. Drawing inspiration from the backdrops of Ipanema Beach and the vibrant coastal city of Rio de Janeiro, our shoes embody the perfect combination of laid-back beachside style and elegant urban charm.


Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking, but when she walks she smiles but she doesn't see... ". Near Ipanema beach, two young men spontaneously wrote these iconic lyris after spotting a beautiful girl walk past. In 1860, this song swept the world and brought the romance of Rio de Janeiro along with it. The Ipanema brand is inpired by this: Rio, Ipanema Beach, beautiful women, flip flops. Each element is interwoven.

The Ipanema brand was founded in 2001, and has grown to comprise of styles for women, men and kids. The product line contains flip flops, sandals, and high heels. In 2003, Ipanema expanded into the international market, and in the following year expanded to sell in more than 90 countries worldwide. Ipanema is cherished for it's vitality, color, elegance and quality of comfort.

Factory Background

Ipanema's factory is the world's largest manufacturer of Grendene sandals, and is based in Brazil.

Brazil Grendene Group was established in 1971 in the outskirts of Farroupilha, and now has an annual output of two hundred million pairs of plastic shoes, with 13 world-class large scale plants as well as more than 30,000 employees. The company is engaged through the entire production process from raw material handling to design to brand development. Factory brands include Ipanema, Melissa, Grendha, Rider, Zaxy, Cartago and more than 50 others. The entire export volume accounts for 40% of all shoe exports leaving Brazil.

Ipanema PVC material is the primary raw material and includes a specialized formula created to maximize comfort and flexibility. The formula includes more than 70 unique ingredients and 99% recyclable material developed with the environment in mind. This special lab-tested blend has also allowed Grendene to offer value added services to Wal-Mart, Payless, meldisco, Target, Deichmann, Foot Locker and other worldwide companies. It is also the official manufacturer for FIFA (World Football League), Barbie, Disney and PPG.

Born in 1949, French Parisian designer Philippe Starck is world-famous as a legendary designer. He has over his career won innumerable awards including the Red Dot Design Award, the iF Design Award, the Harvard Excellence in Design Award, The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences Annual Five Star Diamond Award and the French "Legion d'Honneur".

Starck has collaborated with Ipanema for three years of fashion-forward styles. From city to beach to anywhere you are, elegance starts at the soles of our feet.

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has graced the covers of the world's greatest magazines: Rolling Stone, Forbes, Newsweek, Time and Vogue. She has collaborated with fashion brands like Versace, Dior, Stefanel and Max Factor. The Guinness Book of World Records has declared her to be the richest supermodel in the world.

In 2002, Giselle Bundchen officially joined Ipanema and co-operated and launched "Ipanema X Gisele Bundchen", which has sold 200 million pairs so far. As a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, she is known as "the world's most environmentally friendly celebrity", Ipanema and Giselle Bundchen support the ISA (Social Environment Research Institute), to promote human attention to the Earth's natural environment. 99% of the shoe materials can be recycled before use, furthering the brand's commitment to environmental responsibility.

Origin and Development of Flip Flops

The name "flip flops" originated in 1972. It's still unknown as to who was the original creator of flip flops, but it's value is undeniable. Today, the flip flops have a more diverse design, but the theory is still the same: connecting to a single passband, using rubber as a common material. As manufacturing processes have improve, soft PVC materials have proven to be the most comfortable type.
